Manchester United’s search for a new centre-back may reach a grand finale, as the latest report from Spain links them with a move for Real Madrid superstar Sergio Ramos.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desparate to find a new partner for Harry Maguire but his pursuits of RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly have so far been fruitless.
Elsewhere, the Red Devils remain heavily linked with a swoop for a new right-winger after they missed out on Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho last summer.
Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele has consistently been on United’s radar over the last two seasons but the club may need to move fast if they want to secure the Frenchman.
All that and more in Friday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.
Barca open Dembele contract talks
Manchester United have long been touted as a potential destination for Ousmane Dembele, whose time with Barcelona has been plagued by injury.
The Frenchman was on the market at a cut-price last summer due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, while he was believed to be available on loan in the upcoming January window.
But United’s chances of signing the World Cup winner may soon receive a huge blow, as the Catalan giants have entered talks over a new deal for the 23-year-old, according to ESPN .
Dembele has started the season well with four goals in 10 games and Barca boss Ronald Koeman is keen to extend his contract – which is due to expire in 2022.
United eye centre-back swap
Manchester United will use Eric Bailly as a makeweight to secure a deal for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, according to TEAMtalk .
Torres, 23, continues to go from strength to strength for his boyhood club and has racked up 54 senior appearances.
His form earned him a call-up to the Spain squad last year, while the player’s release clause is set at £60million.
United are loath to meet such a fee up front, and will instead use Bailly in a part-exchange move.
Bailly joined the Red Devils for £30million in 2016, so it is hoped his inclusion in the deal will go some way to reducing the up-front fee.
Ramos linked with European giants
While Pau Torres is tipped to develop into a world-class centre-back, there may already be one of those on the market in Sergio Ramos.
Real Madrid legend Ramos has entered the final year of his deal at the Satiago Bernabeu and is yet to agree to an extension.
While a new deal with Los Blancos is a possibility, according to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, a host of European giants are interested in the 34-year-old, including United, Arsenal, AC Milan and Juventus.
Ramos continues to defy his age and has scored three goals in 10 games this season.
