Manchester United returned to winning ways in style on Saturday evening with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
Of course, those defeats laid bare the need for defensive reinforcements at Old Trafford after a transfer window that strengthened Solskjaer’s attack without adding a centre-back.
United will be expected to dip into the market in January if they fail to find consistency during the first half of the season.
With January arrivals possible, here is the latest United transfer round-up.
United eye Valverde
United have stepped up their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, according to the Sun.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan, who has established himself as a regular in Zinedine Zidane’s first team at the Bernabeu, has a whopping £640m buyout clause in his contract.
Tipped for a bright future, United are said to be keeping a close eye on his progress following a series of impressive performances for Los Blancos last season.
Paul Pogba, who recently admitted his dream of playing for the Spanish giants, could be used as a ‘pawn’ in any potential deal.
Dortmund say United ‘misjudged’ Sancho deal
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke claims United ‘misjudged’ the Jadon Sancho situation by trying to negotiate a fee for the winger.
Dortmund were willing to sell Sancho to United over the summer for £108mILLION, a price the Premier League side felt was too high.
With Sancho not agitating for a move to Old Trafford, Dortmund were able to ward off United and retain the player’s services until January at least.
“[They] misjudged the situation,” Watzke told ZDF Sports via Manchester Evening News.
“We would be more willing to compromise. We had a clear line and will continue to do so next summer.
“In this industry, you can never say that a player is completely unsellable.”
Haaland favours Madrid move
Dortmund striker Erling Haaland views Real Madrid as his next destination, according to Spanish outlet ABC.
Haaland has been in sensational form since joining Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January, scoring 21 goals in 24 games.
United attempted to sign the Norway international before his move to Germany and risk missing out on the 20-year-old once again.
The report credits United and Chelsea with an interest in the prolific forward but it will be difficult to persuade him out of a dream switch to the Spanish capital.
United keen on Sporting wonderkid
United are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon youngster Luis Gomes.
The 16-year-old, who signed his first professional contract earlier this month, has also attracted interest from Atletico Madrid.
Despite his new five-year deal with the Portuguese side, United are thought to have agreed a first-refusal option should Sporting opt to sell in the future, which would cost the Red Devils £14million.
United have previously bought Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Bruno Fernandes from Sporting.
