Manchester United confirm Cristiano Ronaldo return

Ex- Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has urged Jesse Lingard, Daniel James and Anthony Martial leave Manchester United for the good of their careers amid Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival.

In what was a whirlwind 24 hours that started with Ronaldo seemingly bound for the blue half of Manchester, the five-time Ballon D’or winner was remarkably announced as having agreed a deal with his former side Man Utd to mark what is undoubtedly the biggest transfer the Premier League has seen this window.

Ronaldo leaves Italian outfit Juventus after three years, the Serie A giants set to pocket just £15m plus £8m in add-ons as the 36-year-old’s contract entered it’s final 12 months.

Though Juventus failed in their ultimate goal to win the Champions League with Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar still bagged 101 goals in 134 games – winning two Serie A titles in the process.

Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford with the aim of inspiring them to the kind of success they achieved during his first stint, where he won three Premier League titles alongside one FA Cup and one Champions League.

United are without a trophy of any kind in four years, while their wait for a league title dates back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of the club eight years ago.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could look to trim what is quickly becoming a bloated squad in the wake of Ronaldo’s return and Sherwood believes Lingard, James and Martial should all look for new clubs.

Rumours remain rife over a potential move to West Ham for Lingard, who spent the latter half of last season on loan with the Hammers, impressing enough to force his way back into the international fold.

James has struggled to live up to the hype that followed his stellar start at the club, making just 15 Premier League appearances last term and has often been touted with a move to Leeds United.

It is a similar story for Martial, who arrived in spectacular fashion following his debut goal against Liverpool, but has failed to kick on and become the talent many thought he would be.

“I think a few players will need to go,” Sherwood told Premier League productions after Ronaldo’s Manchester United return was confirmed.

“They need to hand in a 25-man squad, there’s a few there who are not getting in the squad.

Should Man Utd sell all three of the stars mentioned by Sherwood? Have your say here.

“Jesse Lingard misses out, I think he needs to go and play for West Ham. He had a great time there last year, he looked like he wanted to go and play football and he was outstanding. I think it’s his time to leave the club.”

Sherwood continued, “I think Daniel James might leave as well. Leeds are chasing him and he played well against them in the first game of the season. It was a great rehearsal for him. He’s got outstanding pace and directness. I think he’ll be another one [who leaves].

“For me, Anthony Martial will be moved on. If they’ve got a home for Martial and they can get the right money, I think they will shake hands and say it never worked out.”
