Sir Alex suggests Solskjaer should have started Ronaldo

Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United not to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Old Trafford legend is desperate for his former teammate to be backed – and for the club not to rush into another appointment like former boss Jose Mourinho.

Schmeichel’s vote of confidence comes at a time of growing clamour for United to dismiss Solskjaer despite the manager signing a new three-year contract in July.

The Norwegian was heavily supported with over £130million of spending in the summer transfer window, but results on the pitch have not reflected this with United winning just two of their last six games.

However, Schmeichel insists the club’s hierarchy should not bow to “ridiculous” pressure for his fellow 1999 treble winner to be sacked just so a “so-called big-name manager” can replace him.

“I think it’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous,” Schmeichel told ITV when asked about recent calls for Solskjaer to be axed. “Do they want another [Louis] Van Gaal or another Mourinho? What do they want?

“It’s been tried, bringing in the so-called big-name managers and they don’t have the same care and attention to detail in the youth and development and DNA of the club as Ole has.

“That period before him [Solskjaer], a lot of players came in and a lot of coaches left, so everything needs to be rebuilt. I hope people understand that it takes time.”

Schmeichel highlighted how Solskjaer led United to a second-place finish in the Premier League in the 2021/22 campaign, adding: “Remember, we finished runners-up last season, if we can do that again it will still be very good.

“So give Ole time. Let’s not throw all these big headlines out there saying ‘Ole out’, because the next question is ‘who?’

“If anyone can come up with a manager who is guaranteed to do better then I’m willing to debate that but at the moment I don’t see that name out there.”

Solskjaer spent 11 seasons as a forward for United and subsequently worked as a coach in the first team and manager of the reserves before returning to the club as caretaker manager in December 2018.

He was announced permanent manager three months later and Schmeichel clearly values his long-standing connection with the club.

However, Solskjaer has failed to lead United to silverware as he embarks on his third full season as United boss, having fallen short against Villarreal in last term’s Europa League final.

Mourinho, in contrast, led the Red Devils to the EFL Cup and Europa League during his two-and-a-half year stint in the role.

The Portuguese’s predecessor, Louis van Gaal, managed United for two seasons and won the FA Cup before his sacking in 2016.
