Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talks Ronaldo

Anthony Elanga admits he was “starstruck” when he found out Manchester United had signed Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old has returned to Old Trafford 12 years after he left for a then world record fee.

Elanga would’ve been just seven when the Portugal star headed to Real Madrid as a global star in 2009.

Now the pair will be team-mates with Ronaldo poised to make his second United debut against Newcastle this weekend.

The forward has long been hailed as the gold standard for how a professional footballer should conduct themselves.

Elanga was given a hand full of opportunities last season, scoring against Wolves on the final day.

Anthony Elanga is looking to learn from Man Utd new boy Cristiano Ronaldo

He remains in and around the first team squad with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regularly giving youth a chance.

And now the 19-year-old from Sweden is looking to see what he can learn from the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“I was starstruck when I heard he was coming to United,” he told Fotbollskanalen.

“But I have calmed myself down a little now.

“I will be looking at everything with Ronaldo. How he does what he does, what he does before and after training. I’ll be asking the questions any other person would.

“He’s won everything with United and knows what it takes to play for the club. He’s a legend.

“I have heard he speaks a lot with young players and I look forward to meeting him.”

United will hope Ronaldo’s arrival can have a positive impact on a host of their young players.

Academy stars like Elanga and Shola Shoretire made appearances last season and are looking to further their development.

There are concerns about Mason Greenwood though, who has scored in each of the team’s three games thus far.

The 19-year-old may be ushered aside to make way for Ronaldo, who is poised to come in from the start.

Danny Murphy has said: “It’ll delay his progression. I thought Greenwood and [Edinson] Cavani, with a sprinkle of [Anthony] Martial, would be the main strikers. Then put Greenwood on the right when [Jadon] Sancho needed a breather.

“Now with Ronaldo coming in there, which isn’t something that was planned for months, it’s something that’s just happened as a gamble for them wanting to win the league.

“It will be at the detriment of some of the other players. It’s keeping that balance of everyone happy. Is Cavani going to get enough minutes? Greenwood is 19 so he’ll suck it up.

“That’s the only negative of the signing, the delay of Greenwood playing more minutes in games.”
