Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partners offered cash reward to knock down ring legend

Manny Pacquiao ‘s head trainer Freddie Roach offers $1,000 to anyone who can drop the Filipino legend in training – but he is yet to lose any money.

Pacquiao is set to fight WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence on August 21 in his first fight since defeating Keith Thurman by split decision in July 2019.

Roach and Pacquiao have worked together for the past two decades, during which time Pacquiao has won titles in eight weight classes defeating top fighters such as Juan Manuel Márquez and Ricky Hatton.

Spence will have a size advantage over the 5’6 Pacquiao, though since fighting at heavier weight classes ‘Pacman’ has been accustomed to being the smaller fighter in the ring.

And Roach said that whilst he always offers Pacquiao’s new sparring partners $1,000 if they can drop him, none of them have put him out of pocket.

Pacquiao is clearly a hard man to put down in training

“Manny doesn’t know that! I’ve always kept it a secret but every sparring partner I hire, I say, ‘You knock him down, I give you a thousand bucks’. And I’ve kept a thousand in my pocket,” Roach told SunSport.

It’s unsurprising that a household name in boxing such as Pacquiao attracts large crowds to gather. This is why Roach had to hire security to watch the gates of his gym, Wild Card Boxing, in downtown Los Angeles.

“There’s a little more people in training camp. People love to see Manny Pacquiao and his entourage is getting a little bigger,” Roach continued.

“Manny draws a lot of people to this area and so forth but I had to hire security guards and uniformed police officers that have to watch the gate and keep his people away.

“Because it’s a pretty important fight for Manny and he’s doing really well, he’s fighting one of the best guys out there.”

The legendary boxing trainer concluded by saying that he wanted Pacquiao to take a fight with four-division world champion Mikey Garcia instead of Spence. Garcia called out Pacquiao for a fight following his decision win against Jessie Vargas last February.

“I was leaning towards Mikey Garcia, maybe a little smaller, not as strong, but when he did pick Spence I did give him a call and congratulated him,” he said.

“I love that Manny picked a real opponent and that’s one thing about Manny is he’s always going to fight the best out there.

“We’re fighting the best again, we’re getting ready for it and I love what I see so far but we still have about four weeks to go.”
