Manchester United star Anthony Martial has been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford – especially after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo who will surely push the Frenchman further down the pecking order
Anthony Martial has confessed to a major concern of his at Manchester United after scoring for France against Ukraine.
The striker was given a surprise call-up to Les Bleus despite his lack of game-time at Old Trafford.
But he took his chances well when he appeared against Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying match that ended 1-1 – with Martial getting the equaliser to spare France’s blushes.
It was a fine show of faith from Didier Deschamps, who did not pick Martial over the summer for the Euros due to injury troubles and poor form at United.
And the former Monaco man’s situation in Manchester might become worse after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 36-year-old will surely command a spot in the first-team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – at a time when Martial was looking to bounce back after a torrid time the season before.
The Frenchman netted just four times in the Premier League last season and Edinson Cavani became first-choice striker ahead of him towards the end of the campaign.
It could mean, now with Ronaldo among United’s ranks, that Martial has been relegated to the third option – or less should Solskjaer prefer Marcus Rashford when he returns from his shoulder operation.
After his point-salvaging goal against Ukraine, the 25-year-old was coy in his interviews but did elude to the fact that his confidence had taken a hit in recent weeks.
“It was a difficult match for us, we were able to come back to the score, it was the most important,” he told L’Equipe.
He added: “It’s been a long time since I had not scored, so it does me a lot of good.”
Martial had been linked with a move away from United this summer with Solskjaer looking to bolster the club’s coffers.
After signing Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo, the Red Devils were desperate to see some cash come the other way.
However, only one significant departure came when Dan James signed for Leeds United for around £28m.
That is despite interest in Martial from the likes of Inter Milan but a transfer failed to materialise.
And Solskjaer did not want to see the forward go, insisting he will beat the doubters once again.
He said: “He is up for the challenge, he is Man United player and we are happy to have him. He has proven doubters wrong so many times.”
