rsenal’s Under-21 side suffered a disappointing night in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday as Gabriel Martinelli’s return from injury coincided with a 3-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon and William Saliba being sent off.
Martinelli has been out of action since June due to a knee injury, but he got his first minutes on Tuesday night during the game at Plough Lane.
The forward completed 45 minutes before being taken off, however he could not stop the young Gunners falling to defeat to their League One opponents.
Ryan Longman, Paul Osew and Joe Pigott got the goals for the Dons as they scored three times in the final 23 minutes to progress to the last-16.
The defeat means Arsenal’s Under-21 side are out of the Papa John’s Trophy and their night was made even worse by two red cards.
Tim Akinola was sent off in the 80th minute after picking up his second yellow card and moments later Saliba was given his marching orders too.
The young Frenchman, who is yet to make his senior debut for Arsenal, was sent off in the 89th minute after picking up his second yellow card.
