Nuno wants to solve Kane situation internally to avoid ‘public argument’

Tottenham’s audacious bid to sign Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez is likely to end in failure after his agent stated the striker is happy to stay with the club.

It emerged on Sunday that the north London outfit had lodged an offer of £60million to sign the Argentina international.

Such a fee would have broken Tottenham ’s current transfer record set when they paid £55m to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in 2019.

Martinez has scored 49 goals in 132 games for Inter since joining from Argentinian outfit Racing Club in 2018 and helped the Nerazzurri win Serie A last season.

Lautaro Martinez was subject of a £60m bid from Tottenham

According to The Times, financially-stricken club Inter had accepted their offer for the 23-year-old, just days after agreeing to sell Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea for a British transfer record fee of £98m.

But their hopes of signing the Argentinian could be dead in the water with the forward reluctant to leave the Serie A champions.

The player’s agent, Alejandro Camano, responded to speculation regarding his client’s future with a blunt statement, claiming Martinez will remain in Milan.

“Lautaro is happy at Inter and in Italy. His decision is to stay,” Martinez’s agent Alejandro Camano said, speaking to TyC Sports.

In another interview with FC Inter 1908, Camano was also directly asked about Spurs’ bid and reiterated that the player would not try to force an exit.

“He is never going to have a fight with Inter to leave the club. Never,” he said.

“Lautaro is an Inter player and he’s happy in Italy.”

It marks a huge shift in attitude from Martinez, who appears to be unmoved by interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham in this transfer window.

However, in the summer of 2020, it was understood the Albiceleste star was on the verge of joining Barcelona before the deal collapsed due to Inter’s demands.

Diario Sport reported that Martinez was keen to head to Camp Nou to link up with his compatriot Lionel Messi in 2020, before the club’s financial problems prevented the move from materialising.

On that occasion, the same representative, Camano, hinted that Barca’s interest had been well received by his client.

“We’re very calm, we have to resolve the Inter situation first, but of course he’d like it,” Camano said when asked whether Lautaro would pursue a move to Catalonia.

“Who wouldn’t like to play for Barcelona? They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Nuno Espirito Santo is looking to strengthen his Tottenham squad

With Martinez now unlikely to leave, Spurs may need to look to alternative targets in order to strengthen before the new season starts.

It is believed Spurs are searching for a striker to play alongside Harry Kane — not to replace the want-away striker.

Nuno Espirito Santo is looking to embed his side into his favoured 3-5-2 formation that worked favourably at Wolves, which would see Martinez partner Kane in attack.

However, they could be dealt a double blow with Manchester City targeting a deal to sign Kane before the transfer window closes on August 31.

The 28-year-old returned to training on Saturday in quarantine conditions after his absence from the club’s Enfield complex last week.

Kane’s desire to leave has not changed since returning to the club after his extended break away from the first team.

But with Tottenham standing firm on their £160m reported asking price, a deal is looking increasingly difficult.

The club have also been linked with Fiorentina frontman Dusan Vlahovic, who struck 20 goals in Serie A last season, with Football.London reporting their interest back in June.

Spurs have already raided Atalanta for goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and centre-back Cristian Romero, with sporting director Fabio Paratici’s clear focus on signing talent from Serie A.
