McElhenney reveals bizarre souvenir he gets from every Wrexham game he watches

Rob McElhenney has shown the grass is truly greener in Wrexham after unveiling his unique souvenir collection from the Racecourse.

The American actor is coming up to four years of co-ownership of the Welsh side alongside fellow Hollywood icon Ryan Reynolds.

Together, the duo have overseen the once fallen giant of the Football League returning to League Two from the National League – ending a 15-year wait.

And last season, the Red Dragons achieved back-to-back promotions to seal a return to League One for the first time in 19 years.

Having come close to success in their first two years in charge, Wrexham are now going from strength to strength – as shown by their stunning start in the English third-tier this term.

Wrexham sit top of the table after their first five games – winning four and drawing one – boasting a goal different of +9.

Their rise up the English pyramid is a script not even Hollywood could write – though fans have had the luxury of watching it play out on Disney Plus’ ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ docuseries.

And thankfully for McElhenney – creator and star of hit TV show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadeplphia – he’s got the perfect gift to showcase his side’s story.

Appearing on the latest episode of the ‘This Week in Wrexham’ podcast, McElhenney reflected on his four years overseeing the Welsh outfit.

Insisting the time has ‘flown by’ and pointing out how his eldest child now looks completely different from when he first started out, he then showed a gift made by his wife Kaitlin Olson, who also co-stars on Always Sunny.

The heartwarming present enclosed in glass contains seven clumps of grass from special matches attended by the Philadelphia native – with one picked in his absence.

Showing it to the camera, McElhenney said: “This was a gift that Kaitlin got me, every game I take a little piece of the pitch with me, I just put it in my pocket.

“So this marks all of the special games, most recently League One promotion [from League Two] – Wrexham 6, Forest Green 0, April 13, 2024.

“I actually wasn’t there for that game because we weren’t sure whether that was going to be the clincher.

“So I had Humphrey [Ker, Wrexham executive director] grab me a bunch of grass and he put it in a plastic bag for me.

“Every other game I’ve been to, and it goes back to our first home win – Wrexham 5, Maidstone 0, August 20, 2022.”

A League One blockbuster clash against Birmingham is next up for Wrexham, live on talkSPORT 2.

Just like Wrexham, the Blues boast overseas owners, with NFL legend Tom Brady a minority shareholder.

And McElhenney cannot wait for the encounter, as he issued a prediction for the fixture.

He posted on X: “See you next Monday @TomBrady 😉 Should be an absolute banger.”
