Lionel Messi was the big story last summer – and his long-term future at Barcelona is still far from certain.
After initially communicating his intention to leave, Messi agreed to stay put at the Nou Camp for another year.
The removal of Josep Maria Bartomeu as president, recently replaced by Joan Laporta, has changed things significantly for Messi.
But the Argentinian superstar is still out of contract this summer and is taking a patient approach to deciding his future.
Barcelona are believed to be preparing a new three-year contract offer for Messi.
Messi, however, is happy to take a step back and is in no rush to put pen to paper, according to Marca.
His father and agent, Jorge Messi, was in Barcelona earlier this month and returned to Argentina last week.
They had dinner with Laporta, who told Messi that he would do all he could to convince him to stay.
A formal meeting to discuss a renewal could be on the cards with claims Barcelona will submit an offer but will be unable to match his current salary due to their financial situation.
The Catalan club are awaiting an audit which will determine how much they can offer, whilst Messi himself is in no hurry to put pen to paper.
It is claimed Messi’s plan is to continue focusing on his football, aiming to win LaLiga to complete a double after lifting the Copa del Rey.
He also wants to be patient to allow Laporta to prove himself with actions rather than promises having been burnt in the past.
Messi’s rocky relationship with Bartomeu escalated after numerous broken promises.
As a result, he is keen to see how Laporta operates before committing himself to the club.
Barcelona’s transfer business is also set to be of interest.
It has been widely reported that Messi would love to welcome Neymar back to the Nou Camp, and he is said to be demanding to know whether or not that move will be possible before making a decision.
Whilst the signing would be complicated because of Paris Saint-Germain, Messi knows Laporta is working behind the scenes and wants to know what will happen.
He is also keen to discover if Sergio Aguero, his international team-mate, will join him in Spain with plans for a formal but relatively low offer as he leaves Manchester City.
With further meetings planned, Messi’s current plan involves focusing on his football and closely monitoring activities behind the scenes at Barcelona in order to determine whether that is still where he sees his future.
