Flaming Rib took the final race on Wednesday’s card. Mr McCann, a horse owned by Liverpool stars including Jordan Henderson and James Milner, competes on Thursday
Michael Owen has celebrated huge winner at the races and his lucky jockey could make it a football-themed double tomorrow.
The two-year-old, trained by Tom Dascombe at Owen’s stables in Cheshire, took the lead in the closing stages of the Sky Bet Nursery Handicap, which went off at 5.23pm.
Closing the card, headlined by Mishriff’s display in the feature Juddmonte International, the contest had a first prize of £36,078.
Owen, who co-owns Flaming Rib with several others, watched on as the youngster came home in front at odds of 16-1.
And in less than 24 hours, there could be another dream result for Liverpool.
Winning jockey Pierre-Louis Jamin rides Mr McCann, a horse owned by Anfield stars Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold, in Thursday’s OR8Wellness EBF Stallions Nursery Handicap (4.10).
Owen said: “Flaming Rib is a tough horse. I must admit out of the three (runners from Dascombe’s stable) he was the one that we fancied the most, but in a big field like that, a competitive field at a meeting like this you can never be confident but he has put in a really tough performance.
“There was a headwind out there, it’s a big wide open track, there were lots of runners, you have got to be professional to win here and he has certainly done it really well.
“It’s great to win at York. My local track is Chester and we try to keep all of our owners really happy there but when you have a nice horse you have to venture away from your home track. This is one of the highlights of the racing year so it”s great to get one on the board.”
Mr McCann, named after Liverpool’s press officer Matt McCann and owned in partnership with Adam Lallana, is also 16-1 (with Grovesnor Sport ) to give the team another memorable success.
Including Flaming Rib, rider Jamin has won on three of his past four rides, in his best season so far.
“We will be back here tomorrow,” Owen added.
“One of our runners is Mr McCann, owned by five of the Liverpool players as the sixth man has now moved to Brighton.
“He has been another great success story for our stable. He carries a lot of weight and we have the same jockey riding, claiming off him, so fingers crossed.”
