Mikel Arteta gets green light to make third Arsenal signing of summer window

Arsenal have been given the green light to sign Denis Zakaria after Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl admitted he wants to leave the club this summer.

Zakaria, who has also been linked with a move to Manchester City during the transfer window, is one of many midfielders Mikel Arteta is looking at as he aims to add reinforcements in the middle of the park.

The Gunners have already sealed a £17million deal Albert Lokonga from Anderlecht, but with the expired loan deals of Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos, and Granit Xhaka expected to join Roma, the North London club are still in the hunt for more midfielders.

Arsenal were keen on making Odegaard’s move permanent, but the Norwegian will fight for his place at Real Madrid under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, while Ceballos will also return to the La Liga giants.

Xhaka is set to link up with Jose Mourinho at Roma, but the Gunners should receive around £20million in return with a deal close to being finalised.

Zakaria is a prime candidate to be his replacement as the 24-year-old has emerged as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Europe.

And Monchengladbach chief Eberl has conceded they might be forced to sell the rising star as contract talks have stalled with Zakaria expressing his desire to leave the Bundesliga side.

He said: “With Denis (Zakaria), we have been trying to extend his contract since October.

“Denis and his management told us pretty clearly that they would prefer a transfer this summer.”

Arsenal are also looking for a creative midfielder before the window closes in six weeks’ time with James Maddison emerging as Arteta’s preferred option.

The Foxes are open to selling the England international this summer with the playmaker reportedly keen on a switch to the Emirates.
