Mohamed Elneny is adamant that Arsenal should do all they can in order to keep Martin Odegaard at the club long-term.
The Norwegian midfielder, who was signed on loan from Real Madrid back in January, has become an instant regular for Mikel Arteta.
There have been criticisms from ex-Gunners stars, with Martin Keown, Tony Adams and Freddie Ljungberg all questioning the decision to bring him in.
Many of those reservations stem from Emile Smith Rowe being forced to play out wide on the left.
Since his arrival, Odegaard has been Arteta’s preferred option as a No.10, leaving Smith Rowe to be moved away from his most natural position.
But Odegaard has continued to prove his doubters wrong, scoring two goals in his last pair of starts, including the vital equaliser in the north London derby against Tottenham.
However, there appears to be no such concerns within the Arsenal dressing room, with Elneny labelling the loan star as a potential captain at the Emirates.
“You always see him coaching players, outside of the dressing room as well,” the Egyptian told VGTV.
“He talks all the time about the game and what we are going to do. He has the personality to be a captain.”
In his current deal, it is understood that there is no option to buy, however reports claim that Arteta has informed the Arsenal board he wants to keep him at the club moving forward.
Madrid’s difficult financial situation could tempt them into offloading the 22-year-old to fund new signings of their own.
According to The Mail , Arteta has urged Gunners bosses to do all they can to strike an agreement, even if that means taking Odegaard on another loan spell next season.
And Elneny is similarly desperate to see his midfield colleague, replying to a question about a permanent transfer with: “We wish, we wish, we wish.”

Odegaard has recently hinted he would be interested in staying with Arsenal, clamining he is very happy with the kind of stability he has found playing for Arteta.
“I said many times that I have been looking for stability [at the same club], but haven’t found it,” Odegaard told VG last week.
“I think it will be important to find stability. I am very happy at Arsenal, enjoying myself. I like it here.
“Now my focus is to finish the season then we will see.”
