ose Mourinho has admitted his frustration at losing a key player to injury who was rested for Monday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at Championship Wycombe.
The Tottenham manager declined to name the individual concerned but Standard Sport understands Sergio Reguilon will miss Thursday’s visit of Liverpool and the next few weeks with a muscle injury, despite being an unused substitute in the 4-1 win at Adams Park.
“I’m not going to say [who] because I’d prefer you [the media] not to know but I’m pretty sure you will find out,” Mourinho said.
“It’s tough in the sense that you don’t expect to lose a player that you rested. That’s the frustration. We went to Wycombe to try to win the game, of course, with a very strong team, with a very strong bench. We tried to managed the minutes and then to lose a player who was not in the starting line up at Wycombe was not the best feeling.”
Reguilon hopes to be back in action in around three weeks but he can also expect to miss the league games against Brighton, Chelsea, West Brom and Man City, and the FA Cup fifth-round at Everton.
His absence leaves Mourinho short of cover at left-back, with Ben Davies expected to be passed fit to face Liverpool despite being forced off in stoppage-time against Wycombe.
England left-back Danny Rose is frozen out of Mourinho’s first-team squad, while Ryan Sessegnon is on loan at German club Hoffenheim. Japhet Tanganga can play at left-back.
Without the Spain wing-back, it will be harder for Mourinho in the short-term to employ the back three he used in the 3-1 win over Sheffield United in Spurs’ last League outing – but he did not rule out employing the system again in future.
“We wanted to be very aggressive in that match [against Sheffield United], to press really high,” Mourinho explained.
“We knew the problems we had at Sheffield last season. Many times playing with three [at the back] can be a very offensive way, we pressed the ball very, very high. We created chances. It was a special match… but I’m not saying we cannot play again with the back three. We did it against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and the team is progressing, they are going to get more experience, learn more. So I’m not saying in the future they cannot play it again.”
