Raphael Varane relishing Manchester United challenge

Manchester United are facing a potential injury crisis, after it was confirmed Raphael Varane will be out for “a number of weeks”.

The Frenchman picked up the muscle strain whilst playing for Les Bleus during their successful run to the UEFA Nations League.

Varane was forced out of the final against Spain and it has subsequently been confirmed he will be on the sidelines for a number of games.

In a statement released on Tuesday, United said: “Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League Final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club. He will be out for a few weeks.”

It means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be without both of his first-choice central defenders for a pivotal run of fixtures in his Old Trafford tenure.

United will run the gauntlet both at home and in Europe, in a true test of their credentials to win silverware under the Norwegian.

Harry Maguire missed the last two before the international break and while there is hope he could return soon, Varane is a different story.

The World Cup winner looks set to miss Premier League games against Leicester, Liverpool and Tottenham, while he will also be absent for back-to-back Champions League group stage matches against Atalanta.

Without the former Real Madrid man, United will likely turn to Victor Lindelof, who partnered Varane during the draw with Everton last time out.

He was also the surprise starter when United were humbled by Swiss minnows Young Boys in their opening European game of the season.

It was a familiar story for the Swede, who struggled under an aerial bombardment, unable to provide the kind of physical approach adopted by the two starting centre-backs.

No longer a starter, Lindelof has clear deficiencies which were spotted by the manager that signed him, Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese sanctioned a £30million fee for the Benfica defender back in 2017, but he has failed to ever live up to a fee, with inconsistent performances plaguing his time in English football.

And speaking after he left the Old Trafford dugout, Mourinho identified three clear weaknesses in his old player’s game.

“As Gary Neville was saying and totally right, Lindelof is very, very good in some aspects of the game,” he told Sky Sports during a punditry stint in 2019.

“But he can be bullied in the one-on-ones in the box, he’s not especially good in the air and Maguire has that kind of presence and physicality that is very, very important.”

With shrewd tacticians like Brendan Rodgers, Gian Piero Gasperini and Jurgen Klopp already plotting how they can beat United, Solskjaer will be hoping they ignore ‘the Special One’s’ crystal clear blueprint of how to ruthlessly exploit Lindelof’s weaknesses.
