In the European Conference League, Roma put five past CSKA Sofia to continue their impressive start to the campaign under the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United manager – but he was far from happy
Jose Mourinho ruthlessly ripped into his own team despite seeing them smash CSKA Sofia 5-1 in the Europa Conference league on Thursday night.
After coming from behind to convincingly defeat 10-man CSKA, an unhappy Mourinho said his team “didn’t play well” and that he was “not satisfied with the performance”.
Roma began their European campaign emphatically, continuing their form from the league where they top Serie A.
But the Bulgarian team took a surprise lead in Rome when Irish forward Graham Carey scored from close range.
It only took Roma 15 minutes to equalise through captain Lorenzo Pellegrini. From there, the hosts at the Stadio Olimpico pulled away with goals from Stephen El Shaarawy, Gianluca Mancini and former Chelsea man Tammy Abraham.
Abraham has settled well into the Italian side, impressing with two goals and two assists in his first five games.
The Portuguese manager said: “We didn’t play well. We are really creating a team, but today I didn’t like our game.
“At times we did well, a strong team is coming together, we have already talked about it and must be even more of a team when we go into the difficult moments.
“However, I was not satisfied with the performance at all. We did not play with quality.
“Just two days ago we trained about this, but the full-backs didn’t push much, there wasn’t enough intensity, we lost so many defensive duels.
“I cannot say we played badly, but we didn’t do well either and certainly not enough to warrant a 5-1 result.
“Yes, we have more quality than CSKA Sofia, but we didn’t do enough.”
Despite savaging his own side’s performance, Mourinho singled out club captain Pellegrini for praise and revealed the 25-year-old was set to sign a new contract with the club.
Mourinho said: “He is a player with quality, a great deal of potential and he told me yesterday that he’ll sign the new contract soon.
“I think it can definitively give more strength to this rapport he is building with the fans. Pellegrini is the captain, he will sign a new contract and is very important for us.”
The midfielder was full of praise for his new manager and said that Mourinho was creating “something special” at Roma.
Pellegrini said: “Mourinho’s trust has helped me a lot, I can only thank him but this is only the beginning.
“He has to keep making me and also the team grow.
“This year there is something special and we have to keep improving if we want to win something. We try to make the most of this environment.”
