Jose Mourinho asks for time as he is unveiled as Roma manager

Jose Mourinho’s Roma suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Norwegian minnows Bodoe/Glimt on Thursday night in potentially the low point in the coach’s lengthy career.

The Serie A side were heavy favourites going into the Europa Conference League encounter but were humbled by the Scandinavian hosts, who blew them away in the second half.

It came in the aftermath of the Italian club’s director Tiago Pinto laying blame on the media for “trying to create confrontation” between himself and the Portuguese boss.

Thursday’s result means that Mourinho’s side have now lost three of their last five matches in all competitions, with painful losses in the Italian top-flight against city rivals Lazio and Juventus.

Striker Erik Botheim and midfielder Patrick Berg had given Bodoe/Glimt a two-goal advantage in the first half, but Carles Perez pulled one back for Roma – who were then expected to launch a fighting comeback.

Instead, the Italian side collapsed in the second half as Botheim added two more goals to complete his hat-trick while goals from Amahl Pellegrino and Ola Solbakken piled the misery on the visiting team.

It means that the Norwegian side have leapfrogged Roma into top spot in the group – which includes CSKA Sofia and Zorya, of Bulgaria and Ukraine respectively – but the manner of the result will have alarm bells ringing in the Italian capital.

The manner of the result may remind Tottenham fans of their exit from the Europa League last year, when Mourinho’s side surrendered to a tame 3-0 defeat away to Dinamo Zagreb in the knockout stages.

Yet Thursday’s result will only add to any tension in the Italian capital after the club’s director Pinto hint out at Italian media for reporting on apparent tension between him and Mourinho.

Pinto told Sky Sport Italia, in quotes carried by Football Italia : “It is from September 1 that you have been trying to create some confrontation between Mourinho and myself.

“You did not accurately report the comments made by the coach.

“When we talk about the lack of options, the reference is to the age of the players and their experience.

“Clearly, if we want to make comparisons with Inter or Juventus, they have a different project in place and are playing in the Champions League.

“That does not mean we are not united in our vision.

“You have been asking the same questions since September 1 and trying to create a problem that doesn’t exist.”

Pinto was in fiery mood in his pre-match quotes, appearing to double down on the criticism directed towards officials after Roma’s 1-0 loss against Juventus in Serie A on Sunday night.

Mourinho’s side were awarded a first half penalty – which they failed to convert – but were left outraged as the referee had awarded the foul prior to striker Tammy Abraham finding the net in a glorious opportunity.

“We are concentrated on what we want to improve as a team. Everyone saw what happened, but we are concentrated on improving.

“I don’t want to talk about referees anymore.”
