Italian Ogbonna has been crucial to the Hammers’ excellent run of form in 2021, but he was substituted in the first half of the midweek FA Cup fifth-round defeat at Manchester United with an ankle injury suffered during a challenge with Anthony Martial.
West Ham confirmed on Friday that Ogbonna has suffered a sprained ankle, with he club commenting that a potential timescale for his return will “become clearer as he continues to be assessed as part of his rehabilitation”.
Addressing the injury during a subsequent press conference held before Monday’s visit of Sheffield United, Moyes said: “It is a big blow for us, he has been magnificent for us.
“I have no time frame for him to come back and I don’t know if I’d want to put one on him.I don’t think it needs surgery at the moment, but he will see a specialist and hopefully I’ll know more in the next few days.”
There was better news with regards to Michail Antonio, with Moyes hopeful that West Ham’s attacking talisman will be fit to face the Blades after suffering with fatigue.
“Doing well, he has done a bit on the grass and we’re trying to get him back quickly,” Moyes said of Antonio. “We’re hoping he’ll be available.”
