Nadal pulls out of Wimbledon semi-final due to abdominal injury

The Spaniard struggled with the issue while beating Taylor Fritz in his quarter-final clash to set up a showdown with Nick Kyrgios for a place in the final, scheduled for Friday.

However, the match will now be a walkover for the Australian.

He told reporters at an impromptu press conference: “Good evening. I have to pull out of the tournament.

“As everybody saw yesterday I have been suffering with the pain in the abdominal [area]. That’s confirmed. I have a tear in the muscle.

“I have a tear in the abdominal, the muscle. I was thinking about the whole day about the decision. But it doesn’t make sense to keep going. If I keep going the injury will get worse and worse. I feel very sad to say that.

“I don’t want to go out there and not be competitive and with a big chance to make things worse.

“Everybody knows what effort I put in to be here. I can’t risk that much and [then spend] two, three months out of the competition.”

The injury ends Nadal’s hopes of a calendar Grand Slam, after winning the Australian and French Opens in spectacular style.
