Newcastle vs Chelsea: Premier League – LIVE!

The Blues return to Premier League action at St James’ Park in a Saturday lunchtime kick-off, looking to continue their excellent form displayed prior to the international break.

Frank Lampard’s side came from behind to demolish struggling Sheffield United a fortnight ago – their fourth straight victory across all competitions.

Indeed, Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last 11 outings, though Lampard has made his frustration clear at having to contest today’s early Premier League fixture after such a busy week of internationals.

Looking to stop the visitors going (temporarily at least) top of the table this afternoon is a Newcastle team that currently sit 13th after a relatively underwhelming start to the season.

Steve Bruce’s Magpies took a good point at Wolves and beat high-flying Everton before the break, but threw away that progress with a rather listless 2-0 loss at Southampton last time out.

Newcastle boast a good recent home record against Chelsea, though the Blues have won five of the last seven meetings in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce confirmed during his pre-match press conference yesterday that striker Callum Wilson could play some part for the hosts against Chelsea after a hamstring injury suffered in the 2-0 defeat at Southampton prior to the international break.

Both Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie are also closing in on their respective first-team returns, but Ryan Fraser is sidelined along with the likes of Martin Dubravka, Dwight Gayle and Paul Dummett.

With players returning from all over the globe at different times and with different levels of fatigue, this isn’t the ideal fixture for Chelsea.

No sooner has everyone got back and they’ve got to leave again, catching a Friday flight for Saturday’s early kick-off. Still, this is where coaches earn their money.

Not only have they got to pick the right team, they’ve got to make sure that everyone switches back to club mode and remembers the messages that had been drummed in. Frank Lampard was just beginning to see the fruits of his work before the break.

His Chelsea team had tightened up to concede less goals. Another clean sheet at St James’ Park would surely mean three points for his side.

Predicted Chelsea XI

Here’s how Standard Sport sees Chelsea lining up for today’s clash on Tyneside:

Chelsea predicted XI (4-3-3): Mendy; James, Zouma, Rudiger, Chilwell; Havertz, Kante, Mount; Ziyech, Abraham, Werner

Prediction: Newcastle 1-3 Chelsea

The Blues were on a roll before the international break, so form will obviously be impacted by that – but Chelsea will be expected to pick up another three points on the road.

If Thiago Silva misses out, Newcastle will fancy their chances of causing problems.

Still, Chelsea’s attack should be too strong, especially with Hakim Ziyech is such good form.

Chelsea will assess both Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell ahead of today’s game.

Thiago Silva is set to be rested for this afternoon’s match following his travels with Brazil during the international break, while Christian Pulisic is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Havertz has been given the all-clear following his positive coronavirus test earlier this month, but has been training alone in a bid to restore match fitness.

Chilwell suffered a minor back injury with England in the Nations League defeat by Belgium last weekend, but is expected to be involved at St James’ Park.
