Newsboy’s Boxing Day racing tips include Clan Des Obeaux

CLAN DES OBEAUX gets the vote to join the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase (3.00) greats with a third victory in Kempton Park’s Boxing Day treat.

The iconic three-miler shows Sam Twiston-Davies’ mount in his best light – Clan Des Obeaux beat Thistlecrack in 2018 before thumping stablemate Cyrname by 21 lengths last Christmas.

My selection returned with a two-length second to Bristol De Mai in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase last month.

That was a fine effort considering the winner’s record at Haydock Park and the run will have brought Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old to concert pitch for today.

No fewer than 15 horses have captured the race more than once since its inception in 1937 and Clan Des Obeaux can join three-time King George hero Wayward Lad, Desert Orchid (four) and Kauto Star (five) in the Pantheon.

It’s folly to oppose EPATANTE as she seeks to repeat her success of 2019 in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle (2.25).

It was her five-length margin over Silver Streak 12 months ago that launched the Nicky Henderson-trained mare into the reckoning for the Champion Hurdle.

Epatante duly followed up at Cheltenham in March and her runaway comeback score in the top-level Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle sent a chilling warning to the two-milers intent on stealing her crown.

The Grade 1 Ladbrokes Kauto Star Novices’ Chase (1.50) represents a good opportunity for SHAN BLUE to enhance his burgeoning reputation over fences.

High class rather than top class over hurdles, the Dan Skelton-saddled son of Shantou has taken his form to a new level since tackling the larger obstacles, winning two novice events at Wetherby by an aggregate of 30 lengths.

There is plenty more where that came from and Shan Blue is a worthy market leader to step up to the highest tier and go in again.

Skelton’s Alnadam looks sure to start favourite for the Play Ladbrokes 5-A-Side On Football Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (1.15), but preference is for MR ONE MORE.

A chase-debut second to Antunes at Chepstow last month was a fine effort after 1016 days on the sidelines and a BHA handicap mark of 136 looks within range.
