NFL legend and American Football commentator John Madden has passed away at the age of 85, the NFL confirmed on Tuesday.

A statement from the National Football League said that the famed NFL coach and commentator died “unexpectedly”.

Madden was in charge on the touchline to guide the then-Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory over the Minnesota Vikings in 1977.

Later on in his life, the beloved NFL hero became a household name as a TV analyst after retiring from coaching.

He was also the voice and name behind the franchise’s popular video game series ‘Madden’, which has been released annually every year since 1988 and has sold over 250 million copies.

Madden was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
