Ogbonna and Zouma showing they can be pillars of West Ham success

S

eeing as it felt like this game between Everton and West Ham was destined to finish goalless, it should have come as no surprise the winner came from an unlikely source.

Angelo Ogbonna spent most of the afternoon heading balls away from his own box, but in the end he popped up in Everton’s to win the game and take all three points back to London.

Truth be told it was a lovely header, flicked home at the near post after Jarrod Bowen had fizzed in an excellent corner from the right.

It was, on the balance of play, no more than West Ham deserved and it was also no more than Ogbonna deserved.

The centre-back was the Hammers’ best player on an afternoon where they were required to dig in and grind out the win.

Time and time again, Ogbonna was the one making a vital block or heading the ball clear and – even if he hadn’t scored the winner – he would have probably been man of the match.

There is naturally a lot of talk and excitement at West Ham right now around Kurt Zouma’s arrival and his addition to the heart of defence.

The Frenchman has slotted in seamlessly, and he was good again here at Goodison Park, but Ogbonna out shone him today. He was a rock at the back and David Moyes will have been delighted with this performance.

Crucially, Ogbonna and Zouma also appear to be forming a partnership at the back and that will stand the Hammers in good stead going forward.

Given the hectic nature of their schedule, which is busier than usual given the addition of the Europa League, West Ham will have afternoons where they have to battle it out to get a result.
