Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opens up on “unfair” Paul Pogba situation

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits it was unfair of him to throw Paul Pogba in the deep end so soon after he recovered from the coronavirus.

The France international missed the start of the season as Manchester United lost to Crystal Palace after testing positive for Covid-19 in late August.

But Solskjaer returned Pogba to his starting XI against Brighton and Tottenham, and the midfielder struggled to reach top gear in either game.

Pogba was subsequently dropped for the win over Newcastle, before he came off the bench against PSG, where he set up Marcus Rashford to score the game’s deciding goal.

Pogba also came off the bench for United in this weekend’s draw with Chelsea, and is starting to look more like his old self now that he is matchfit.

And with the benefit of hindsight, Solskjaer now believes that it was unfair of him rushing Pogba back into the first team.

“When you’ve got good players it’s a nice challenge and a decision to make when you’ve got good players on the bench that can come on and impact the game,” Solskjaer said.

“I think Paul, all three games this week, he’s really come on and made a very positive impact. He’s been out for a while with coronavirus this summer, so he’s getting better and better and maybe more his shape.

“Maybe I was unfair to him starting him that early in the first few games but he’s coming on and he’s done great when he’s come on.”
