Olivier Giroud traded London for Milan this summer, choosing to leave Chelsea and bringing to an end a nine-year spell in English football.

The World Cup winner moved across London, joining Chelsea from Arsenal in 2018 after six years at the Gunners. But after three years at Stamford Bridge, he admitted that life had become “too difficult” to continue.

Opting to take on a new challenge in Italy, Giroud said his decision to leave for AC Milan had become an “obvious choice”.

Giroud walked away after winning the Champions League, FA Cup, and Europa League with the Blues. However, with growing competition for places, the Frenchman was forced to accept a fresh start was needed.

Talking to Telefoot, the 34-year-old explained his decision to move to Italy had come after a conversation with Thomas Tuchel. He said: “I liked the Premier League, but at some point, I had to make a decision.

“I told [Thomas] Tuchel that the last three months had been too difficult.

“It was an obvious choice to leave Chelsea, I moved on with great emotion for all the moments we experienced. Some were good, some others not so much, but we won three important titles.”

During his years in England, Giroud scored 105 goals for Arsenal, and then another 39 for Chelsea, over a total of 370 appearances across his time with the two London giants.

Giroud has already registered two goals in four games for the Italian side.

The veteran French striker is far from the oldest member of the squad, as he lines up with 39-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic and he believes that winning the Scudetto is a realistic target for the Rossoneri squad.

He said: “Zlatan is a legend and there will be a real competition between us. I can score at least 15 goals, that’s what I hope. If I play every game, that’s what I expect.

“I hope [we can win Serie A], we have the quality and young players. It’s a clear target we have.”

As it stands, Milan finds themselves second in Serie A, only two points behind Napoli, the Serie A leaders are unbeaten after six games and are yet to drop a point.

Despite losing against Liverpool in their Champions League opener recently, Milan impressed during the game and will look to get points on the board in their second group game.

They welcome Atletico Madrid to San Siro on Tuesday night.
