Onuachu scouting report: Would Genk star be a good signing for Spurs?

ottenham‘s seemingly never-ending search for a back-up to Harry Kane has a new name in the mix in Paul Onuachu.

Spurs have always struggled to find someone happy to spend their time in the England captain’s shadow and have been without a competent understudy since the departure of Fernando Llorente in 2019.

While Kane’s desperation to leave Tottenham may make the role more attractive to potential targets, it is still a tough sell for anyone arriving in the knowledge that the talisman won’t be dislodged while he’s still there.

The north Londoners have now been linked with Genk’s towering centre-forward Onuachu.

The Nigerian international has nine goals in 10 Belgian league games so far this season after notching 29 last term.

The 6ft 7in striker has been linked with a number of other sides, including London rivals West Ham – though manager David Moyes was quick to dismiss any talk of interest this week.

Onuachu led the line for Genk in their Europa League defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Thursday night, and on the evidence of that performance he would need to improve greatly should a move to Spurs ever materialise.

The 27-year-old clearly has an eye for goal given his domestic statistics, but despite some early concerns he was easily managed by West Ham’s second-choice defensive pairing of Craig Dawson and Issa Diop.

While Onuachu won three aerial duels, to be expected of a man of his stature, the striker managed just two shots, neither on target and one being a gifted header thanks to a mistimed punch from Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, and also lost the ball on more occasions (five) than any other player on the pitch.

Given his height, Onuachu is certainly a presence going forward and could prove good foil for those around him. However, at 27 there would be little time to allow for development and growth – especially should Kane get his wish and leave Tottenham.

The search for an understudy may well continue.
