De La Hoya has revealed his praise for the Paul brothers who “are bringing fans to the sport” with Jake Paul’s next ring outing against Tyron Woodley fast approaching this weekend
Oscar De La Hoya has praised brothers Logan and Jake Paul for launching their recent careers in boxing stating that they are “bringing fans to the sport”.
The Paul brothers have already made waves in the sport with some of their recent fights with the older brother Logan fighting undefeated American Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition clash earlier this summer, in addition to a double-clash with British YouTube star KSI.
His brother Jake will now return to the ring for his fourth professional fight against former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley this weekend in Cleveland, which is expected to generate further interest in the YouTube star’s career that he believes will result in him becoming “world champion”.
And former Mexican legend De La Hoya has issued his praise on the brothers, labelling their involvement in boxing as “great for the sport”.
“I think Jake and Logan Paul are great for boxing overall,” De La Hoya told ABC7’s Rob Fukuzaki.
“In boxing we are always questioning why is it going down or why are the ratings so low, or why are there not more world title fights and why is it the fanbase diminishing.
“It’s not really on the face of it, but when you have stars like Jake and Logan Paul bringing a whole new fanbase to boxing, I embrace it one-thousand percent.
“Now kids are coming up to me in the street because of them, now they know who Oscar De La Hoya is and Manny Pacquiao is as these YouTubers are bringing kids into the sport through their platform and through social media.
“So I embrace it always definitely yes.”
De La Hoya was talking ahead of his own return to the ring in a clash that will now be classified professionally against former UFC star Oscar Belfort as part of a fight-night that includes the returns of Anderson Silva and David Haye in September.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn previously promoted a fight between Paul and YouTuber KSI but has now revealed that he wants to return his focus “back to boxing” despite having “no issues” with his brother Jake’s clash with Woodley.
“I don’t have a problem with it, Jake Paul’s putting the work in, he’s now had three fights, he’s fighting a guy that can fight in some capacity and he’s a UFC champion,” Hearn told talkSPORT.
“Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul was just a joke and so’s David Haye vs Joe Fournier, but it’s just a bit of fun.
“Some people want to almost respect their legacy in the sport and some just wanna make as much money as possible.
“We just need to focus on boxing, like the Josh Warrington card with Katie Taylor and Conor Benn. The AJ vs Usyk fight, this is what we need to focus on.
“We need to deliver numbers for DAZN and our broadcasters because otherwise broadcasters will be asking for YouTube fights and that’s not a sport I wanna be in.
Paul has already confidently altered his knockout prediction against UFC star Woodley at the weekend, claiming that he will get the job done “in two rounds”.
