Newcastle United have recently become the richest club in the world and fans are speculating about who they could sign, but Paul Merson has reminded supporters it’s not a game
Paul Merson has unleashed a scathing rant following Newcastle’s completed takeover, and listed realistic signings as opposed to buying players as if you’re playing “Football Manager”.
Newcastle recently became the richest club in the world, and rumours have been circling about the club’s next steps as they now have a war chest to sign new players.
Steve Bruce’s side currently sit in 18th and are without a win, but new shareholder Amanda Staveley has said that their aim is to be challenging for the Premier League title within five years.
However, Merson believes that improvement is “going to take forever”, in an emotional rant.
Merson spoke about Newcastle’s first steps in recruiting new players, and explored what the likely options could be.
“Top six, 15 players then [needed]. They’ve got Saint Maximin who is a good player, Callum Wilson when he’s fit he’s a good centre forward but the first thing they’re going to do is sign a striker,” he said.
“When you’ve got a lorry load of money first thing you do is sign a striker, you want to buy a super star.
“After that who? Joe Willock, Arsenal let him go. Decent goalkeeper, [Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie] they’re good players but where you’re saying you want them to be.
“You’re naming all the players that are there now they’re bottom of the league! They’re second bottom of the league.
“They’re good players, they’re steady players and I think they do well to stay up every year I really do, this is going to take forever.”

This is where the discussion turned slightly sour, as Merson then slammed the idea of Newcastle splashing the cash within the league, and offered his views on more realistic options.
The Sky Sports pundit said: “Let’s not beat around the bush. You can’t just go out, it’s not like Football Manager, you can’t just go out and go I want to buy Messi, Mbappe, Neymar – the players they are going to look for Tarkowski, he’s an edge of the box defender.
“He’ll sit on the edge of the box, put his head in, defend, he is a dream for a manager.
“He’s not someone who plays on the half-way line you’ve got all that grass behind him, they’ll be buying Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli, probably go after Maddison, it’s not going to take you to the Premier League title.”
Merson wasn’t the only one to have a rant this week, as the Newcastle boss was particularly upset ahead of their match against Tottenham this weekend, after it’s been widely reported that he is set to be replaced by the new owners.
Bruce let his anger out amid reports about his future as he said: “It hasn’t happened – what you all wanted, I’m still here. I’ve tried to keep my dignity but it’s been difficult.
“I hope you guys [journalists] are getting a slap from your bosses, getting a bit of heat. Whoever was feeding you information, they didn’t get it right, did they?
“You haven’t done your jobs properly. It’s not been easy preparing for Sunday with what’s been going on. What I cry out for is a bit of respect – no matter how difficult it is.”
