Paul Pogba makes clear what Man Utd must offer for him to sign new contract

Paul Pogba has hinted he is ready to complete a Manchester United U-turn and remain with the club – as long as he can make one position his own.

The Frenchman’s future has rarely been out of the headlines ever since he admitted that a move to Real Madrid would be “a dream”.

His agent, Mino Raiola, subsequently added more fuel to the fire when he suggested his client was unhappy at Old Trafford.

“I can say it’s over for Pogba at Manchester United,” Raiola said ahead of their critical Champions League tie with RB Leipzig last year.

“Paul is unhappy with Man Utd as he is no longer able to express himself in the way that he would like and as he is expected to. Paul needs a new team, a change of air.”

Paul Pogba’s future has been the source of constant speculation in recent months

The Italian has since backtracked on those comments, with Pogba enjoying one of his most consistent runs of form for the club.

But with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, there will likely be more discussions about his future.

Raiola recently claimed the 28-year-old could remain with United, as long as they were able to compete at the top of the European game.

“Pogba has always been interested in one thing, winning the Champions League, titles, that’s his objective,” he added. “And we’ll see if that’s possible at United or at other big European clubs.”

Pogba has the chance to lift the Europa League for the second time since his £89million return in 2016, as they go head-to-head with Villarreal in Gdansk.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started Pogba alongside Scott McTominay and behind Bruno Fernandes after spending much of the last few weeks as an auxiliary wide man.

He has previously claimed he prefers playing in forward positions, where he is able to truly influence games.

“But I always want the ball, to touch the ball, be there to make the last pass, third pass, assist shot header and as well to be there defensively I can do it,” he explained earlier this year

“I would prefer to be further [forward] but as long as I play that’s all that matters.”

Interviewed before kick-off in Poland, the World Cup winner seemed to suggest he would be willing to extend his stay in Manchester, if he can stick in one position moving forward.

“Maybe the next step is to stay and play in one position, to help my team to win the Premier League,” he told BT Sport.

“That’s the next step, that’s what I’m saying. Everything is possible. If you don’t believe it, then there’s no point playing.”

Solskjaer was asked about Pogba’s role in the final, suggesting Fred’s injury was the decisive factor.

He explained: “I think we do it in our own way. In our spirit, it’s attacking football, pace of course and power and that quality.

“The main reason for it is Fred has been injured this week. He only trained last night, he got through the session but we didn’t want to risk him for the full 90.

“Unfortunately for him he got that knock against Fulham, but this team has played together before so we’re ready.”

In what promises to be another intriguing summer regarding Pogba, finding his long-term role at Manchester United could yet prove critical.
