Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Paul Pogba was reportedly furious with Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being left out of the starting XI for the heavy 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The Frenchman had criticised the Red Devils’ repeated defensive mistakes when they were beaten 4-2 by Leicester a fortnight ago.

And in a clear message by his manager, Pogba was left on the substitutes’ bench as Man United were embarrassed by their bitter rivals Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick after Naby Keita and Diogo Jota put the Merseyside outfit 2-0 up as United went into the interval four goals down.

Pogba, 28, was introduced for Mason Greenwood at half-time but his time on the pitch was short-lived.

First, he gave away possession on the centre circle after being swamped by two Liverpool players, which led to Salah completing his hat-trick early in the second half.

Then, the World Cup winner lunged into a reckless challenge on Keita and was shown a red card on the hour mark, with VAR upgrading it from a yellow.

Solskjaer could be seen watching his side in silence from the touchline and later admitted it had been his “darkest day” as a football manager.

According to The Sun , Pogba apologised to his team-mates after the final whistle for his moment of madness.

But he chose not to engage in conversation with Solskjaer, with the Norwegian boss understood to have lost the support of key figures in the dressing room.

Pogba has run down his contract to its final year and has stalled on renewing terms, meaning he could walk away as a free agent next summer.

The £89million signing was left out of the team for 3-2 comeback win over Atalanta after speaking out on their mistakes against Leicester.

“We’ve had these kinds of games for a long time,” he said.

“We have not found the problem, conceding easy goals – we need to be more mature, play with more experience and arrogance in a good way.

“We need to find something, we need to change.”

Solskjaer has come under huge pressure for his job amid reports the club’s hierarchy met to discuss his future on Monday.

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been strongly linked as Solskjaer’s potential successor, along with Zinedine Zidane and Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.

However, it has since emerged that the 48-year-old is likely to take charge of their must-win fixture against Tottenham on Saturday.

Solskjaer insists that he is edging closer to finding the formula to turn around United’s season after no wins in their last four matches.

“I have come too far, we have come too far as a group. We are too close to give up now.

“It is going to be a difficult one. The players will be low but there’s loads of characters there.

“We know we are rock bottom, we can’t feel any worse than this. Let’s see where we take it.”

Solskjaer reportedly has three games to save his job, with Tottenham, a Champions League clash against Atalanta in Italy and a derby against Manchester City up next.
