Guardiola gives verdict on Man City’s win over Burnley

Pep Guardiola has hinted that he wants to see more from £100million man Jack Grealish.

The 25-year-old has already played 10 times for Manchester City but sat out the weekend win at home to Burnley and his manager has challenged him to keep improving his off-the-field approach to suit the demands of his new team.

It was the first time Grealish had been benched for a Premier League match since the start of the season, following his English record transfer from boyhood club Aston Villa.

Guardiola has admitted he is yet to find the England star’s best position, despite being “excellent” for the Citizens this term.

But the Catalan coach also made note that Grealish is still adjusting to rigours of life as a footballer who plays a game every few days in competitions such as the Champions League.

Guardiola wants more from Grealish two months into his Man City career

“We spoke about that,” Guardiola revealed during his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s trip to face Club Brugge on Tuesday.

“About what he has to live when he’s not here with eating, resting, sleeping, living 24 hours for his profession.

“He has been excellent so far.”

The Citizens boss also admitted that he is yet to find Grealish’s “best position,” suggesting a more consistent role in the side could be the key to the playmaker exploding at the Etihad Stadium.

“Every game except Burnley last game at a good level,” Guardiola declared.

Grealish has two goals in 10 games for Man City

“I’m sure he will improve. I have to find his best position.

“The games he played, he played well. If he’s focussed in the game, on and off the pitch, he’s strong.

Some questioned City’s decision to pay such an eye-watering fee for yet another creative player, with the in-form Bernardo Silva and attacking lynchpin Kevin De Bruyne standout names.

It has seen Grealish play most of his minutes on the left wing or through the middle to mixed success.

So why did Guardiola sign him?

“The quality in the final third, to attract many opponents, to find his mates, to score goals to win games. The quality in the final third,” the 50-year-old explained.

“We add another one because we have many competitions. He’s a perfect age.

“The clubs when you are on top of the competitions many years, the squad must be removed a little bit otherwise is more difficult.

“Everyone has to feel pressure from the new ones,” he explained.

“We have to do it, all the big clubs move the players, everyone is a quality, running, defensively depends on it.

“The quality comes for themselves. This is what we want from Jack and all the players we sign.”

Grealish has already opened his Champions League account, scoring in the 6-3 hammering of RB Leipzig in September.

But he will be hoping to both start and produce in Belgium when City face Brugge with the aim of recording their first group-stage victory in this year’s European campaign.
