Pep Guardiola says ‘exceptional’ Oleksandr Zinchenko snubbed Man City transfer

Manchester City star Oleksandr Zinchenko has been lauded by manager Pep Guardiola as he revealed the defender recently rejected a transfer away.

The move was offered by various clubs at the end of the 2019/20 season after the Ukrainian international had a disappointing campaign at City.

The left-back has had 18 starts in the Premier League campaign this season, fighting off competition from Benjamin Mendy, Angelino and Nathan Ake, and it will see him lift the trophy with the club for the third time.

Guardiola said: “Oleks [Zinchenko] fought a lot to be at Man City, a transfer was possible, he said ‘no I want to be here’. That means a lot.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has enjoyed a productive season at Manchester City

“He’s a guy who played in another position, never complains. He doesn’t make mistakes. When you say something, he reads it immediately.

“He is always focused, always concentrated. As a left-back he fights against [Mohamed] Salah, [Marcus] Rashford, [Angel] Di Maria – the toughest opponents and he doesn’t make mistakes.

“His quality with the ball is exceptional, we know it.”

Zinchencko, 24, has made 92 appearances for the Sky Blues since arriving in 2016 from Russian side FC Ufa and has scored two goals and seven assists.

Zinchenko has won eight honours since joining City, most recently sealing the Carabao Cup after defeating Tottenham 1-0 in the final.

And he could win another if City can win lift the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club’s history at the end of the month.

Guardiola’s side will face fellow English club Chelsea in the final on May 29.
