Phil Foden produced another masterclass for Manchester City in their victory over Brighton – but neither he nor manager Pep Guardiola knows his best position.

Foden, 21, lined up as a false-nine for the trip to the Amex on Saturday evening and scored two goals in four minutes to extend City’s lead in the first half.

The England international prodded in from Jack Grealish’s cross before deflecting Gabriel Jesus’ strike beyond Robert Sanchez shortly after the half-hour mark.

Capping his latest sensational performance in a Sky Blue shirt, Foden teed-up Riyad Mahrez in added time to take his goal-and-assist tally to eight in nine games this season.

The youngster has quickly established himself as one of the brightest talents in a star-studded squad and Guardiola clearly values his ability to play across the midfield and attack.

Phil Foden proved impossible to contain for Brighton’s defenders

While Foden confesses he does not know the role he will occupy in years to come, he is relishing “learning new positions” under the tutelage of one of football’s great managers.

“I don’t know where my best position is,” he told Sky Sports after the full-time whistle. “I’m enjoying wherever I play, learning new positions.”

Foden’s uncertain view on his “best position” is shared by Guardiola, but the Spaniard insists his versatility is one of City’s strengths.

He said: “I would say I like Phil anywhere! But I like Phil for the fact he knows how to play football.

“We can have an extra man in the positions we want to play because to pass the ball in certain areas of the game you have to be more players, and he has the quality to do it.

“From reception to the first control and after to have the ability to dribble and be so aggressive and attack 15-20 metres to the central defenders.”

Given Foden’s fine performance as City’s central focal point, Guardiola had little time for a question about whether his side are lacking a striker following Sergio Aguero’s departure this summer.

“Sky, I’m going to tell you something: Arrive one day when we will lose two games and you will ask me if I miss the striker,” said Guardiola.

“I bet you whatever you want. I don’t buy this question, I’m sorry.”

Foden, meanwhile, insisted City could have been better after Brighton rallied in the second half to grab a consolation goal.

“We enjoyed the first half more than the second half,” he said. “We were really good in the first half and a bit poor in the second. In the end we got the result.”
