The Brazilian scored from a late corner to break Spurs hearts as the Reds leapfrogged their opponents to reach the summit of the top flight.
Heung-min Son’s equaliser looked like it had sealed a point as the South Korean cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s deflected opener.
Liverpool made early pressure count through the Egyptian marksman whose strike looped off Toby Alderweireld and over Hugo Lloris into the back of the net.
But Tottenham struck on the counter as Son sprung the offside trap to cleverly beat Alisson at his near post.
Both sides went close to winning it after the break with Steven Bergwijn and Sadio Mane each striking the woodwork before Firmino found the net.
