Pochettino closing in on PSG job with Dele Alli a January target

PSG confirmed the sacking of Thomas Tuchel on Tuesday and Pochettino, who played for the Parisiens between 2001 and 2003, is in advanced talks with the Ligue 1 giants.

The Argentine should be in charge for their first match after the winter break, at Saint-Etienne on January 6.

The 48-year-old, who has been out of work since being sacked by Spurs in November 2019, has rejected a slew of offers in the past 14 months, including two approaches from Barcelona, but believes nothing has been on the same scale as PSG’s project.

Tuchel led the Qatari-owned club to last season’s Champions League Final and they have won their domestic title in seven of the previous eight seasons.

Despite PSG’s total domestic dominance, Pochettino is excited by the challenge at the Parc des Princes and believes they are strong contenders to win this season’s Champions League, with Barcelona lying in wait in the last-16 stage.

Pochettino also believes he can elevate Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to a new level, with the pair widely considered to be among the best players in the world but having so far failed to challenge for individual honours, like the Ballon d’Or.

With the January transfer window opening on Friday, Pochettino will immediately have the chance to reshape his new squad and could attempt to raid his former club for Dele Alli.

Alli is open to a move away from Spurs in January to reignite his career but the club is increasingly reluctant to allow the 24-year-old to leave – either permanently or on loan – next month, as injuries mount in Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Spurs are also hopeful that Alli can still rediscover the form that made him one of the best young players in Europe, while the club are also conscious that they are unlikely to be able to find a replacement of his quality in the January transfer market.

Giovani Lo Celso, Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius and Lucas Moura all expected to miss Wednesday’s visit of Fulham, opening the door for Alli to be given another chance to impress Mourinho against the Cottagers.

As it stands, Spurs are preparing for the match to go ahead as usual despite a number of positive Covid tests at Fulham, which left the London derby in doubt on Tuesday.

Fulham are said to be awaiting the results of another batch of test results before continuing talks with the Premier League over the situation.
