Mauricio has started work straight away at Paris Saint Germain with a warning to the club’s superstars.
Former Tottenham boss Pochettino, 48, has told the players they must show they deserve to wear the shirt as he took training for the first time on Sunday and his first game in charge is at St Etienne on Wednesday.
Pochettino, who had two years at PSG as a player, inherits a team in third place in Ligue 1, there are doubts over the long term futures of their biggest stars, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, and an expectation they must win the Champions League.
They face Barcelona next month in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie and anything but victory will be deemed as a failure by PSG who sacked Thomas Tuchel last month even though he led them to the final last August.
It already looks a tall order for Pochettino who had been biding his time waiting for a chance in the Premier League but an emotional return to PSG has captured his imagination and tempted him back 14 months after he was sacked by Spurs.
Pochettino, who has signed an 18 month deal. said: “In this club it’s always been about excellence, the players have to deserve to wear the jersey.
“I think that it’s a fantastic squad and I think that we can accomplish what this club and the players want because they are competitors and they want to lift trophies.
“Our main goal is to make sure everyone is heading in the same direction. The idea is for everyone to want to win for the club more than anything else. We want to be a strong club with a strong structure.
“It’s not only important for this club to win but also to win with style. The players are the most important, they are the protagonists, but they want to win and be successful.”
Pochettino was on Manchester United ’s radar, Manchester City have admired him as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola and yet PSG seems a strange choice but his links with the club from playing days was the driving force.
Former Argentina World Cup star Pochettino is bringing his tried and trusted coaching staff, including loyal assistant Jesus Perez, with him to Paris. Pochettino has the option of an extra 12 months on his contract.
Pochettino added: “It’s an amazing opportunity, amazing project and I want to start to build again the relationship. I’ve always followed PSG since I was here as a player, it’s always had a place in my heart and is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes. I return to the club with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players.”
