Maria Andrejczyk won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the women’s javelin event, but while most athletes would be keen to look after the prize as a reminder of their achievement, Andrejczyk plans to use her’s for a bigger reason: to help fund heart surgery for a young Polish boy.

Andrejczyk had announced immediately after the games that she planned to sell the medal in aid of a good cause, but settled on the first message she saw.

The Polish athlete posted on social media to announce the decision. Andrejczyk said: “It didn’t take me long to decide, it was the first fundraiser I entered and I knew it was the right one. Like our Antoś, Miłoszek has a serious heart defect and is in need of surgery.

“He also has support from above from Kubuś, a boy who did not make it on time but whose amazing parents decided to pass on the funds they collected to Miłosz. And in this way, I also want to help. It’s for him that I am auctioning my Olympic Silver medal.”

The infant in question, named Milosz, suffers from a rare combination of heart and venous problems which mean that his pulmonary veins don’t function properly. His main hope of survival is via expensive surgery only available in the USA.

Andrejczyk has been keeping tabs on the bids for the medal in relation to how much is required to fully fund the surgery.

The most recent update reads: “I will provide information about all changes to amounts bid in the comments under my post.

“Miłosz needs over 1.5 million PLN for his heart operation. Half has already been collected – now we are aiming at collecting the second half – PLN 700, 000. The auction will begin at PLN 200,000.”

Andrejczyk went into the Olympics as the favourite for the javelin event, however was unable to produce her best form.

The eventual winner, Chinese athlete Shiyinh Liu, threw 66.34 with her very first attempt- and neither she nor any of the rest of the field were able to better it.

Kelsey Lee-Barber of Australia picked up the bronze medal in the event.
