Liverpool’s pursuit of Saul Niguez has hit something of a roadblock – putting Manchester United in the driving seat.
The Reds have been linked with the Atletico Madrid midfielder and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Florian Neuhaus ever since Georginio Wijnaldum left for Paris Saint-Germain.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils have also been linked with £45million-rated Spaniard Saul and have now stolen a march over their bitter Premier League rivals Liverpool.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds currently have a total of 17 non-homegrown players on their books.
Liverpool reaching their maximum number of players permitted by both the Premier League and UEFA means they cannot register any more foreign stars for the new campaign unless they offload individuals first.
This means that Liverpool’s pursuit of Saul is currently on hold, putting Man United firmly in the driving seat for his signature.
The Red Devils are linked with a whole host of new signings this summer with Red Devils boss Solskjaer ready to challenge for the title in the coming season.
United have already signed Jadon Sancho from Dortmund and are in the process of trying to land Raphael Varane.
Upon being announced as a new Man United player on Friday, Sancho said: “I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first-team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day.
“The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League.
“This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am looking forward to working with the manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”
Solskjaer added: “Jadon epitomises the type of player I want to bring to the club, he is a forward player in the best traditions of Manchester United.
