Premier League table: Liverpool, Man Utd level; Chelsea off the pace

ll eyes will be on St Mary’s tonight as Liverpool take on Southampton for the chance to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The champions have stuttered with consecutive draws against West Brom and Newcastle allowing Manchester United to go level on points (33) at the top, though Liverpool remain first by virtue of goal difference.

Elsewhere in the top flight, Manchester City’s 3-1 win at Chelsea on Sunday sent Pep Guardiola’s men fifth, while Frank Lampard is under serious pressure with the Blues eighth following a poor run of festive results.

Arsenal’s resurgence continued with a 4-0 win at West Brom handing Mikel Arteta his third straight win, and sparking hopes that Champions League football is not beyond the Gunners just yet.

Tottenham got back to winning ways by punishing Leeds 3-0 to go fourth in the table, while West Ham are just three points behind Spurs after a fine 1-0 win at Everton. Crystal Palace got a badly-needed 2-0 victory over Sheffield United to put 11 points between themselves and the drop zone.

Meanwhile, Leicester beat Newcastle 2-1 to keep their title hopes on course, Brighton and Wolves drew 3-3, and Fulham’s game against Burnley was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the west London club.
