PSG vs Barcelona: Champions League – LIVE!

Kylian Mbappe destroyed Barcelona at Camp Nou with a devastating hat-trick as PSG ran out 4-1 winners in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie. Mbappe’s imperious display in Spain has made PSG huge favourites to reach the last eight of the competition, and has marked them out as among the frontrunners to lift the European Cup after losing last year’s final to Bayern Munich.

The problem for PSG? They have been here before. The French giants beat Barca 4-0 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Paris back in 2016/17, but crumbled in spectacular fashion in the second leg.

Neymar – now at PSG, but injured tonight – inspired Barca to a thrilling 6-1 win at Camp Nou to send Barca through, with the match now known as La Remontada (The Comeback).

The problem for Barca? The Blaugrana are a club in crisis both on and off the pitch. While Messi is still a world-class talent, at 34 his powers are waning – and unless his team-mates step up in Paris, it will be another year without the European Cup for him.

Koeman calls on Barca to help Messi

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman believes anything is possible with Lionel Messi, but has warned he can’t do it alone in Paris.

“If Leo is capable of playing one of his best games, everything is possible,” Koeman told reporters on Tuesday.

“He can decide a game at any moment. But he can’t be the only one at the top of his game, everyone needs to be.

“We also have to have some luck and make sure we take our chances and are as effective in front of goal as possible.”

Pochettino taking no chances

Asked about PSG’s past failures, Pochettino said on Tuesday: “The past is the past. I started here in 2020, there’s no history for me. I have no emotion linked to past experiences.”

Still, Pochettino made a telling decision by keeping all the players together on the eve of the game, something teams usually do at hotels for away games.

After losing to United, Tuchel spoke of his surprise and concern at how some players arrived late to the stadium for the pre-match get-together, with an air of casual behavior unbefitting the occasion.

Having discussed it with his players, Pochettino is taking no chances: “The important thing is to understand what the team needs, to be together this (Tuesday) night and to prepare this match all together. Everyone agreed this was the best thing to do.”

Test for PSG after damaging comebacks

A lack of concentration and complacency have cost PSG dearly before.

PSG beat Barcelona 4-0 at home in 2017, at the same stage of the competition, then lost 6-1 away on a night of painful humiliation dubbed La Remontada (The Comeback) in Spain.

Two years ago, PSG won 2-0 at Manchester United but slipped to a crushing 3-1 home loss as United reached the quarterfinals.

Those matches saw PSG concede a goal inside three minutes and again during injury time, so the French giants will surely be extra cautious from the first whistle.
