Rangnick reflects on first win as Man Utd manager

Jose Mourinho’s pursuit of Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot has reportedly been dealt a major blow, with a January deal for the full-back now been deemed ‘impossible.’

Dalot had previously been linked with a move to Mourinho’s Roma in Serie A in the upcoming window.

Mourinho signed the former Porto starlet during his time at Old Trafford in 2018 for a reported fee worth £19million.

But according to Italian outlet Il Tempo, Roma have all but given up hopes of a potential loan move for the Portuguese defender.

Reports emerged during former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s rein as United manager after a lack of first-team minutes under the Norwegian boss.

Solskjaer’s preferred choice right-back was £50m signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which subsequently lead to Dalot departing United on loan to AC Milan in the previous campaign.

Dalot returned to Old Trafford in the summer but featured for a grand total of just 89 minutes.

However, following the departure of Solskjaer, the 22-year-old has been handed a chance to impress once more at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick opted to start Dalot in his second and final game in charge during the 3-2 win over Arsenal last Thursday.

And Dalot followed that up by starting in the first game of the Ralf Rangnick era against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Rangnick’s tenure got off to the perfect start thanks to a 78th minute strike from defensive midfielder Fred in what was the only goal of the match.

The win moves United up to sixth in the Premier League, leaving them just three points adrift of West Ham – who occupy the final Champions League place.

Such a shift in the landscape has led to doubts that the deal will ever happen now.

Dalot was utilised in a back four in a ‘Gegenpressing’ philosophy which saw the full-back given the licence to operate a lot higher up the pitch than he would previously be used to.

Alex Telles – who operated on the opposite flank – was given similar freedoms to get forward.

Wan-Bissaka will no doubt be put out by the performances of Dalot and the 24-year-old will have to work hard to get himself back into the team.

The Rangnick era began with a victory

The England Under-21 international will start against Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday but whether Wan-Bissaka or Dalot get the nod for Saturday’s trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich remains to be seen.

“A few of the experienced ones who didn’t get that much game time in the past. Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], hopefully even Luke [Shaw] will be available for the game,” Rangnick told ManUtd.com.

Mourinho’s Roma suffered their second successive defeat on Saturday when they were beaten 3-0 by Inter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma are now seventh in Serie A, nine adrift of the Champions League places and 13 behind league leaders Milan after 16 games.
