Cristiano Ronaldo’s career in numbers

Given he’s only contracted to stay at Manchester United until the end of the Premier League season, there’ll be an onus on Ralf Rangnick to make some significant changes pretty quickly at Old Trafford.

To start, he takes his team to Selhurst Park on Sunday, where the Red Devils will go up against a Palace side that have performed well this season. Patrick Vieira’s team memorably won 2-0 at Manchester City earlier in the campaign.

United will need to contend with the Eagles’ vibrant play and a lively atmosphere, and Rangnick will want to see nascent signs that his own message is getting through.

Here are your latest Manchester United headlines ahead of a crucial day in south London.

Rangnick on GOAT legacy

Speaking to the United website, Rangnick spoke about the players he considers as the greatest to ever play the game alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward is rated by many as the best goalscorer in the history of the game, having netted his 800th and 801st goals on Thursday in the 3-2 win over Arsenal.

But Rangnick was keen to highlight some other stellar names when speaking about the most influential players ever and later referenced Ronaldo in the conversation.

“I think there are quite a few who would come into consideration but I think definitely Diego Maradona is one of them to name,” he said.

“Somebody who also influenced my approach as a coach, because I think he was the first modern no10 in football, was Johan Cruyff. He also had a big influence, not only as a player, but as a coach later on when he worked for clubs like Ajax or Barcelona.”

United branded ‘small club’

In his new book – Adrenaline: My Untold Stories – Zlatan Ibrahimovic said the Red Devils acted with a “small club mentality” when letting Wayne Rooney leave the club.

Rooney is a legend at United and the club’s all-time record goalscorer. After winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in a 13-year spell at Old Trafford, he returned to boyhood club Everton on a free transfer in 2017.

Ibrahimovic wasn’t happy with the way in which Rooney’s exit was handled though and has slammed United in his new book for the manner of the forward’s departure.

De Gea warning issued

Former Manchester City and England midfielder Trevor Sinclair thinks David De Gea may be nearing the end of his time at the club following Rangnick’s arrival.

De Gea has been in excellent form this season in the main, although his mistake on Thursday allowed Arsenal to take the lead at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the game, which United eventually turned around to win, Sinclair questioned how De Gea will fit into the new tactical blueprint instilled by Rangnick.
