Marcus Rashford hopes to rejoin training with his Manchester United teammates on Friday as he nears a return to action.

Rashford, 23, underwent surgery on an ongoing shoulder issue in August after representing England at Euro 2020.

United doctors anticipated he would be sidelined for 12 weeks as he recovered and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he hoped to have the forward at his disposal after the October international break.

Rashford is on course to meet Solskjaer’s target and could return to full training at the Red Devils’ Carrington base on Friday, so long as he receives permission from medical staff.

The United academy graduate tweeted: “Happy Monday. I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green [light] to join in with contact training again.”

He quickly realised he meant to say “green light” and added a second tweet which said: “I suppose I was so happy to tell everybody I missed a word.”

Although Rashford could return to training ahead of the weekend, it is extremely unlikely he will play any part in Saturday’s Premier League encounter with Everton.

He will also miss the Champions League fixture against Villarreal on Wednesday and it will take time for him to build match sharpness after months in the treatment room.

Nonetheless, Solskjaer will be delighted to have Rashford potentially available after international break for the trip to Leicester City on Saturday 16 October.

United are in the midst of a slump in form having lost three of their last four fixtures, including a Champions League defeat at Young Boys, a Carabao Cup defeat by West Ham and a Premier League loss to Aston Villa.

The Red Devils have lacked attacking fluency during their poor run, finding the back of the net just three times in those four games.

Rashford scored 21 goals in all competitions last season even though he was struggling with the niggling shoulder complaint which prompted him to go under the knife this summer.

He has patiently waited to return to training and will play no part in England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary to work on his fitness.

Last week, Solskjaer hailed Rashford’s attitude throughout his spell on the sidelines, saying he has “worked really hard”.

But the Norwegian was also dealt a blow during the 1-0 defeat by Villa on Saturday as defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire suffered injuries.

“Sorry, I can’t give you any updates. We will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday or when we get the scans done and see how we are,” said Solskjaer after the match.
