Rashford sends message to Man City and Liverpool after Man Utd’s nine-goal rout

Marcus Rashford insists Manchester United aren’t going to be distracted by what their rivals Manchester City and Liverpool are doing in the Premier League title race.

After picking up just one point from their last two matches against Sheffield United and Arsenal, and with City and Liverpool both winning their last two matches, United responded in fine fashion with a 9-0 hammering of a depleted Southampton on Tuesday night.

United had seven different goalscorers as Rashford joined Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Saints defender Jan Bednarek, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (twice), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James on the scoresheet.

Southampton Premier League debutant Alexandre Jankewitz was sent after just two minutes at Old Trafford, while Bednarek saw red when the score was 6-0.

The win lifts United up to 44 points and level with rivals City, with their goal difference also receiving a huge boost as they moved to +19, the same as Liverpool and five goals behind City.

Rashford says the Red Devils aren’t looking over their shoulders though, and instead are just focused on what they can do.

“We have to not look at them and just focus on ourselves,” he told BT Sport after the match.

“We’re a team that’s still improving, we’re not a team that’s been a ready-made team for the last two or three years.

“I think we’re just getting there now and we’re still learning a lot as a group so we have to concentrate on ourselves and keep working on improving ourselves.”

On how United kept up their attacking impetus to rack up nine goals, he added: “Just be as simple as possible, keep moving and stay positive.

“It’s easy to take your foot off the gas and just keep possession but we wanted to go out in the second half and score more goals and the lads did that.”
