Had Real Madrid not won their last outing before the international break, the last two weeks would have been hell in the Spanish capital.

As it was, Madrid did sign off with a win prior to the pause for Nations League fixtures and World Cup qualifiers. A 2-0 victory over Real Betis kept the mob at bay and allowed Madrid to regroup over the last fortnight.

Given los Blancos are still unbeaten this season, outsiders may wonder what all the fuss is about. Yet by their high standards, it is totally fair to say that Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been unconvincing at the beginning of the campaign.

That victory over Real Betis was their second in as many home games, but Madrid were held to 1-1 draws in trips to Real Mallorca and Las Palmas. With Barcelona having made a perfect start to 2024/25, the reigning champions are being forced to play catch-up. 

The fanfare around the signing of Kylian Mbappe has given way to questions over whether the collective has become weaker with the signing of arguably the best player in the world. Ancelotti has used the word “balance” on numerous occasions in recent weeks, usually by citing his team’s lack of it. 

It is a puzzle the Italian will have to solve. Mbappe opened his La Liga account for his new club with a brace against Real Betis, and in most matches they play this term Madrid’s superior individual quality will make the difference.

However, the team that looked so coherent on their way to the title and the Champions League last season is in danger of being too top-heavy against the very best opponents.

Real Sociedad are not quite in that category, but they are a handy side and a trip to San Sebastian has long been seen as a potential banana skin by Spain’s big two.

If Madrid can emerge triumphant here, they could start to build up a head of steam. But even at this early stage of proceedings, more dropped points would be cause for worry.

Real Sociedad welcome Real Madrid to the Reale Arena for what should be an intriguing encounter.

Real Sociedad have also stumbled in the first four gameweeks of the season. A pair of 2-1 home losses to Rayo Vallecano and Alaves came either side of a 1-0 victory over Espanyol.

The fixture list until now looked reasonably kind on paper, but Imanol Alguacil’s side have work to do as they aim to be involved in the conversation for a top-four finish.

The fact that both Rayo and Alaves were triumphant at the Reale Arena suggests Real Madrid should not be too fearful of their trip to the Basque country.

It is true that Real Sociedad may well raise their game against the champions, but Madrid should come out on top in Saturday night’s encounter.

There were only two goals in both of Real Madrid’s away games to date, but there is reason to believe we will see more here.

For one, Real Sociedad will not simply sit back and hope for the best. This is a team that have been regulars in Europe over recent seasons, so they will rightly believe they can give Madrid a few things to think about.

However, that sort of approach could play into Madrid’s hands. At some point, Ancelotti’s team will need to produce the sort of attacking patterns that are a feature of every top team’s play.

For now, as they continue to adjust to Mbappe as their line leader, Madrid will be more reliant on individual flourishes. 

As such, if Real Sociedad do push up the pitch, that may end up playing into the hands of a crop of Madrid attackers that thrives on space in behind.

Mbappe has already achieved a great deal in the game, but even he must have been relieved  to score his first La Liga goals last time out.

Now that he has got off the mark in Spain’s top flight, the France international will be more comfortable playing his natural game.

At times in previous outings it looked like Mbappe was trying too hard, so a return to normality would be beneficial for both player and club.

It remains to be seen whether the combination of Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, two players who like to occupy similar spaces, can work long-term in the same side.

In terms of this game, though, we fancy Mbappe’s chances of making the net bulge.
