Redknapp claims Southgate is ‘not convinced’ by Grealish ahead of Euro 2020

Football manager Harry Redknapp believes England boss Gareth Southgate isn’t “a fan” of Jack Grealish ahead of Euro 2020.

Grealish was selected by Southgate in his 26-man squad for the tournament this summer but the manager has a whole host of options in midfield and up top

Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho, Jordan Henderson and captain Harry Kane are just a few of the stars Southgate has in his arsenal.

And Grealish will vie for a starting spot with the likes of Sancho, Mount, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka.

And the ex-Spurs boss thinks Grealish may be fighting a losing battle to persuade Southgate of his worth.

Redknapp wrote in his Sun column : “You’ve got Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, another who looks absolutely sensational. I’ve never known an England manager who is so spoiled for choice.

“And I have not even mentioned Jack Grealish, who is fantastic, although I’m still not sure Gareth is 100 per cent convinced and a total fan.”

Grealish featured in England’s warm-up match against Austria and put on an impressive display.

And despite Redknapp casting doubt over the relationship between manager and player, Southgate has been singing his praises this week.

“We know Jack’s strengths, you saw those the other night, he can carry the ball and draw players.

“He earned a lot of free kicks and almost got an assist, although I think it was a tackle!

“He was always in those dangerous areas, he has progressed and we are pleased he is back.

“His match fitness and match sharpness is still coming, but it’s good he is heading in a positive direction.”

Grealish has suffered with a shin problem this season and was seen icing his leg after he was substituted in the Austrian friendly.

He lulled any worries fans may have had in the post-match interview though, saying it was only precautionary.

Grealish told ITV Sport: “It’s not shin splints actually, it’s different to that, it was like a bit of stress on my shin, it’s a different type of injury.

“I’m not concerned, I’m obviously still aware of it a little bit so I still need to keep on top of it and do whatever I can to heal it after when I play in these games and stuff, that’s why I had the ice on.”
