RFU plan bid to host 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England


he Rugby Football Union (RFU) have announced their intention to bid for the right to host the women’s World Cup in 2025.

The governing body need to secure sufficient private and public sector funding for the bid, but all being well they plan to submit it to World Rugby for consideration in January of next year. France are also contenders to host the tournament.

A study by Sheffield Hallam University’s Sport Industry Research Centre believes hosting the Rugby World Cup could boost the UK economy by £156.25million.

The RFU have ambitious plans to make it the best attended Women’s Rugby World Cup ever, with pool matches staged across England and the final held at Twickenham, which they hope to sell out.

Speaking about the bid, RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said: “Securing RWC 2025 would add to the impressive list of major sporting events that the UK has attracted since London 2012, reinforcing the UK’s international reputation as a leading major events’ destination and a global leader in promoting women’s sport.”
