Rice: My brother had a baby as the second goal went in!

D

eclan Rice says England are ready to to deliver glory after reaching their first ever European Championship final – and revealed his brother’s new baby arrived during the dramatic extra-time semi-final win over Denmark.

Rice started in midfield, as he has done all tournament, as Gareth Southgate’s side booked their spot in Sunday’s final against Italy after coming from behind to beat the Danes.

Mikkel Damsgaard had given Denmark a first-half lead but Simon Kjaer’s own goal levelled the sacred before Harry Kane’s penalty rebound sent the Three Lions into their first major tournament final since 1966.

It was a form of redemption for England, whose last semi-final, at the World Cup in Russia three years ago, also went to extra-time but ended in defeat.

“Time to go one better from the World Cup,” Rice told BBC Sport. “My emotions are all over the place.

“It would have been wrong of us to overlook them. We knew our mentality had to be right. With the quality we had we knew we’d break them down in the end.

“Conceding the first goal was our first set back, you have to take a deep breath and not get carried away.

“A first final since ’66. I so want to do it for the people at home. Seeing the reactions – I’m a fan as well. I wish I was with them cheering, we’ve not won anything yet. Italy are a top side but we’re ready.”

After the game, Rice was spotted on the phone and when asked who he was speaking to the West Ham star revealed it was cause for a double celebration.

“My brother has literally had a baby, as the second goal went in!” he said. “He’s crying his eyes out, he’s had a little girl. It’s a special night all round.”
