Roberto Firmino has risked the wrath of Liverpool fans by appearing to praise Richarlison for his heroics in Everton’s win over their Merseyside rivals.
The Toffees ended their 22-year wait for a Merseyside derby win at Anfield with a 2-0 victory on Saturday which consigned Liverpool to their worst home league run in almost a century.
Richarlison scored in just the third minute to give the visitors a shock victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have endured a miserable defence to their Premier League title crown.
Despite coming under mounting pressure, the visitors held out and hit their hosts with an 83rd-minute sucker punch via Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty.
Victory, their first in 23 derbies, saw Everton draw level on 40 points with their seventh-placed hosts but with a match in hand.
After the game, in which Liverpool lost captain Jordan Henderson to injury, Richarlison posted a snap of his celebration on Instagram – and Brazilian team-mate Firmino has appeared to ‘like’ the picture.
The pair are friends, having played alongside each other for the Brazil national team, but the Liverpool star’s decision to support Richarlison’s heroics against his team will surely anger his own supporters.
Indeed, things are not getting any better for Liverpool as a first defeat in an Anfield Merseyside derby since 1999 at the weekend only added to the sense their season is coming off the rails.
A fourth successive loss means they are on their worst Premier League run since 2002, a quartet of home league defeats is their worst run in more than a century and yet another injury ruling out a fifth centre-back option have left the defending champions stuck in something of a rut.
The Champions League win over RB Leipzig last week now looks like something of a blip in a downward trend which has seen them win just twice in 11 league matches since being top of the table at Christmas.
